SCSA FAQs
What are the extra costs outside of club fees?
Extra costs are team-based. They include referee fees, tournament entry fees, and coaches travel expenses. These fees are collected and administered by the team manager.
How often and where will the team practice? What is my child expected to wear for practice?
Classic and challenge teams practice twice a week for 60-90 minutes in a South Charlotte location. Premier and Region III teams practice three times per week, 90 minutes each session at a South Charlotte location. Our facilities include Davie Park, JM Robinson MS, Ardrey Kell HS, McAlpine Elementary, Olde Providence Elementary, Crestdale MS.
Players are to wear their white or yellow SCSA training t-shirts or blue warm-up for every practice. Practice is generally from August through November & mid-January through May, with optional preseason and winter training provided. SCSA prides itself on the professionalism we instill in our players and our coaching staff.
Will my child’s team go to tournaments?
SCSA requires teams to enter tournaments which will be determined by the Executive Director and DOCs (please see tournament list) depending on the level of the team and tournament. Every SCSA team will participate in the SCSA Charlotte Invitational and State Cup/Challenge Festival. We encourage teams to participate in other tournaments throughout the season. Tournament choices are at the discretion of the team.
What is the difference between challenge, classic & premier? And what travel is involved?
Challenge soccer is a developmental program and an introduction to competitive level soccer. Games are played citywide. The teams are coached by qualified coaches. Tournaments & travel are generally local, but may involve some travel.
Classic soccer is for the more advanced soccer player. It is the predominant competitive level in the state. Games are played in western NC and the Piedmont area. Coaches are nationally qualified paid coaches. Tournaments & travel are on a regional/state level.
Premier soccer is the highest level of competitive soccer within the state, established for players 14 and up. Teams practice three times per week and are coached by a nationally qualified head coach. Games are played statewide while tournaments & travel are on a state/regional/national level. Players are looking towards collegiate level play.
Region III Premier is the highest level of competitive soccer within the southeast region (Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina). Established for players 14 and up, these teams practice three times per week. Teams are coached by a nationally qualified head coach. Games are regionwide; tournaments are on a regional/national level. Players are looking towards playing at the next level (college/professional).
Does my child have the opportunity to move up levels of play?
SCSA aims to place players at appropriate levels and prides itself on promoting from within our club. Our highly qualified coaching staff closely monitors player development throughout the season and at tryouts, whereby players can be moved up or down levels as necessary to aid their individual development.
What is a Director of Coaching?
A Director of Coaching (DOC) works under the Executive Director and oversees an age group. Their primary responsibility is to be a support system for all teams within their age group. Responsibilities include tryouts, coaches, training sessions, player development, standards, and the DOC is ultimately responsible for the day-to-day running of the age group.
What extra training is available?
In addition to the team practice sessions a child is receiving, optional training is also available throughout the season. Services include weekly technical training, speed and agility training, and goalkeeper training, all available at no additional extra cost. SCSA also provides a summer preseason academy and a winter training program to get their players prepared for their upcoming seasons. All of these programs are highly encouraged. Information on the programs can be obtained through our website.
